Sacred Heart and Hofstra will kick off a new season on Monday night in New York.

On Monday night, the 2024-2025 season will begin for Hofstra and Sacred Heart as the teams meet at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for a non-conference contest. The Pride had a tough season last year, finishing with an overall record of 11-21 and a conference record of 3-15 which put them in a three-way tie for last place. Despite a low finish in the standings, the team made it to the quarterfinal round of the CAA Tournament, beating Hampton 71-55 and William & Mary 57-53 before falling to North Carolina AT&T by a score of 55-40. Danielle Santos Atkinson returns as head coach of Hofstra’s women’s basketball team and also returns five from last season’s squad, led by Emma Von Essen and Zyheima Swint, while welcoming five transfers and four true freshmen to the roster.

The Pioneers had a stellar 2023-2024 season, winning the Northeast Conference with a record of 15-1 before going on to win the conference tournament, as well. The team made it to the NCAA tournament, but fell in the opening round to Presbyterian in a 49-42 loss to bring their overall record to 24-10 for the season. Junior Ny’Ceara Pryor led the way for the Pioneers last year, winning her second straight NEC Player of the Year award after setting the Pioneers’ scoring record and leading the NEC in points (18.7 PPG), assists (4.5 APG), steals (3.2 SPG, fourth in the country) and field goal percentage (46.4%) last year. The team will look to her to lead again this year, but this time, the team will be playing in the MAAC.

Sacred Heart and Hofstra have met three times in their histories and Sacred Heart picked up the win the last time they met which was last year, however, the game was a close one in which the Pioneers only won by three in a 63-60 victory.
