Top seed UNC Greensboro looks for a 14th straight win and an NCAA tourney ticket when it takes on Chattanooga

UNC Greensboro (24-6) rolls into Sunday’s Southern Conference tournament championship with 13 straight wins after blowing through the SoCon schedule with a 13-1 record while running away with the conference title. The Spartans face No. 2 seed Chattanooga (16-13) at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina, to decide the SoCon’s automatic NCAA tournament bid. The Mocs, who were 9-5 in conference play, have played in the last two NCAA tourneys while UNC Greensboro made its only appearance in March Madness in 1998 since moving to Division I in 1991.

The Spartans had to come from behind, taking the lead with 7:07 left after training No. 4 seed Wofford by as much as 10 to claim a 54-50 semifinal victory on Friday. Jayde Gamble scored 13 points while Makiah Asidanya added 10 and Khalis Cain pulled down 14 rebounds. Gamble gets 11.8 points per game, with Nya Smith putting up 11.0 points a night and Cain averaging 7.6 points and 8.8 boards.

Chattanooga never trailed after going ahead 1:41 into the game and held off third-seeded Furman on Friday to win its semifinal game 63-55. Karsen Murphy led the attack with 18 points and Caia Elisaldez tossed in 16 points. Elisaldez leads the team at 14.1 points per game, with Gianna Corbitt averaging 10.3 points and 7.2 rebounds.

UNC Greensboro swept the season series while the Mocs maintain a 51-16 all-time advantage. The Spartans won at home 62-48 on Feb. 11 and followed up with a 58-50 road win on Feb. 6. Trina Patterson is 145-128 in her ninth season at UNCG while Deandra Schirmer is in her first season leading Chattanooga.
