Southern Utah and Nevada will meet for their second game in the Nugget Classic on Saturday afternoon in women’s basketball action.

In the second game of the Nugget Classic, Nevada will take on Southern Utah at the Lawler Events Center in Reno. The two other teams competing are Portland and Central Michigan. The Wolf Pack opened their home tournament with a game against Central Michigan, falling in a 60-57 heartbreaker against the winless Chippewas to move to 3-4 on the season. Nevada led by two points after the first quarter, but a big second quarter had the Chippewas taking a five-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Central won the third quarter, as well, but the Wolf Pack made a run in the fourth. Despite getting within striking distance, Nevada could not score the final three points to force overtime. Izzy Sullivan came off the bench to lead the Wolf Pack in scoring, finishing the game with 15 points while Kennedy Lee earned a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds and 13 points.

The Thunderbirds come into Saturday’s game with a record of 1-6 after losing to Portland on Friday night in a 77-63 defeat. Ava Uhrich scored 22 points to lead Southern Utah and was only outscored by Maisie Burnham who scored 23 for the Pilots. Uhrich also led the team on the boards with eight rebounds to narrowly miss a double-double in the loss. The Thunderbirds struggled with their shooting, finishing the game going 23-for-58 from the field and just 4-for-12 from long range. The team did the best from the free throw line with a 76 percent completion rate.

Southern Utah and Nevada have only met three times in history and the Thunderbirds lead the series 2-1. The last meeting dates all the way back to 1994, however, predating any of the players on the current rosters. The Thunderbirds won handily in that game with a 79-54 victory.
