Sweet 16 play continues in the women’s NCAA tournament with a game between Tennessee and Texas on Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon, the fifth-seeded Tennessee Lady Vols will take on the top-seeded Texas Longhorns in a Sweet 16 matchup at Legacy Arena. The Lady Vols made it into the Sweet 16 after beating Ohio State 82-67 in the round of 32 on Sunday. Talaysia Cooper came off the bench to lead the Tennessee offense with 19 points and Zee Spearman finished closely behind with 17 points. Two other Lady Vols also finished in double figures to help the team finish the game shooting 45 percent from the field and 29 percent from long range. Against the Longhorns, the three-point shooting will need to be improved as Texas will shut down the lane.

The Longhorns took on William & Mary in the first round of tournament play, winning handily in a 105-61 victory before going on to beat Illinois 65-48 to advance to the the Sweet 16. Madison Booker led the scoring with 20 points while Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda finished right behind her with 19 points. Taylor Jones rounded out the double digit scorers with 12 points. The Longhorns will look to bring stronger shooting from long range after going 0-for-5 from beyond the arc against the Illini.

Texas and Tennessee have met a total of 37 times in their history and the Lady Vols hold a 23-14 advantage in the all-time series. The teams have already met once this season and the game went in the Longhorns’ favor with a narrow 80-76 victory.
