UConn takes another trip to SEC country when it visits South Carolina, UCLA looks to bounce back from its 1st loss

No. 7 UConn (23-3) takes another shot at a Southeastern Conference power on Sunday when it visits No. 4 South Carolina (23-2) at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina. The Huskies are unbeaten in Big East Conference play at 14-0 and 3-3 against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 while the Gamecocks are tied with Texas for the SEC lead, are a perfect 12-0 at home and 9-2 against ranked foes. South Carolina, the defending national champions, bounced back from a loss at Texas a week ago with a blowout win at home on Thursday night while UConn has won two straight since losing at Tennessee on Feb. 6.

The Huskies hammered visiting St. John’s 78-40 on Wednesday night, getting 34 points from Azzi Fudd, who canned 8-of-14 from 3-point range, while Paige Bueckers finished with 16 points, five blocks and four steals. Bueckers scores 18.7 points per game, with Sarah Strong averaging 16.1 points and 7.8 rebounds.

The Gamecocks scored 62 points in the first half en route to a 101-63 blowout over visiting Florida on Thursday. Joyce Edwards poured in 28 points in the win, with Te-Hina Paopao finishing with 14 points and seven assists and Chloe Kitts grabbing 12 rebounds. Edwards gets 12.9 points per game, MiLaysia Fulwiley drops in 11.5 points a night and Kitts averages 9.4 points and 7.6 boards.

UConn leads the series with South Carolina 9-5, but the Gamecocks have won the last four meetings, including an 83-65 win at home on Feb. 11, 2024.

In another Top 25 matchup on Sunday, No. 1 UCLA (23-1) had its 23-game winning streak stopped at No. 6 USC on Thursday night, falling a half-game behind the Trojans in the Big Ten race at 11-1. On Sunday, the Bruins host No. 22 Michigan State (19-5), which is 9-4 in conference play and coming off a win on Wednesday.

The Spartans come off a 91-71 win at home over Wisconsin on Wednesday. Grace VanSlooten led the offense with 22 points while Theryn Hallock added 18. Julia Ayrault leads the team with averages of 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds, while VanSlooten scores 14.8 points per game.

UCLA went ice cold in the fourth quarter on Thursday, hitting just 2-of-16 shots, as USC came from behind for a 71-60 victory after trailing 52-47 entering the final 10 minutes. Lauren Betts finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Kiki Rice tossed in 15 points with six assists. Betts averages 19.5 points and 9.9 boards, with Rice dropping in 12.8 points per game.

Michigan State leads the series over the Bruins 2-1, but the teams haven’t played since a 47-43 Spartans victory in Los Angeles on Dec. 19, 2003.
