Paige Bueckers leads the UConn Huskies into the Elite 8 against Kiki Iriafen and the top-seed USC Trojans on Monday.

The final game in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament features No. 2 seed UConn taking on top-seed USC on Monday. This was supposed to be a clash between the best two players in women’s college basketball, but after JuJu Watkins went down with a season-ending injury in the second round the Trojans are now the underdogs. They showed a lot of heart in the Sweet 16 with a 67-61 win over Kansas State, led by freshman Kennedy Smith. She led the way with 19 points and smothering defense. Bueckers led the Huskies with the best performance of her career, while breaking the Huskies program record for points in a tournament game.

Bueckers was flat out unstoppable in the second half of the Huskies Sweet 16 win over No. 5 seed Oklahoma. She scored 40 points on 16-of-27 shooting and 6-of-8 from three. Bueckers outscored the Sooners 29-23 in the second half, leading the Huskies to the Elite 8 again.

Outside of 2020 when the NCAA Tournament was cancelled, the Huskies have made the Elite 8 in every season since 1994. Bueckers has seen the Huskies make the Final Four in every season she has been on the roster, but winning a National Championship has eluded her over the last five seasons.

This is the round the Trojans season ended last year. Without Watkins in the lineup Smith, Kiki Iriafen, Avery Howell, Rayah Marshall, Kayleigh Heckel and Talia von Oelhoffen look to push the Trojans to the programs first Final Four in 39 years.
