Freshman Mikayla Blakes leads the Vanderbilt Commodores into the NCAA Tournament against the Oregon Ducks.

In March, sometimes all a team needs to make a run at winning the NCAA Tournament is one elite scorer. That is exactly what seventh-seeded Vanderbilt (22-10) has in freshman Mikayla Blakes. This season Blakes has exploded for 53 points and an NCAA record 55 points for the Commodores. She gives the Commodores the potential to make a run in the Birmingham Regional starting with 10th seed Oregon (19-11) in the first round. The Commodores started the season with a six game winning streak to win the Acrisure Holiday Invitational and won six games one more time in non-conference play showing their ability to go on a run led by the play of Blakes.

This season Blakes is averaging 23.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She has gone for at least 25 points in eight games, leading the Commodores to a 7-1 record when she is able to score at a high level.

Blakes has created one of the best duos in the country alongside sophomore Khamil Pierre who has controlled the paint. This season Pierre is nearly averaging a double-double with 20.5 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.

On the other side of the Ducks this season has been a bounce-back year after seeing transfers and graduations deplete a once contending roster. Deja Kelly has taken the lead after transferring in from North Carolina leading the Ducks on both ends of the floor. Kelly made the NCAA Tournament all four years with the Tar Heels going 4-4 overall.
