Central Intercollegiate Athletic play continues on Saturday afternoon with a game between Virginia Union and Virginia State.

The Virginia Union Panthers will take a road trip on Saturday afternoon for a game against the Virginia State Trojans at the Multipurpose Center. The Trojans are currently 12-4 overall with a conference record of 5-1 which puts them in second place in the CIAA Northern Division standings. The team has now won five games straight with the most recent being a big 78-48 win over Winston-Salem State on Thursday night at home. Kendahl Spearman led the Trojans in scoring with a 17-point performance and Tiyanna James finished close behind, adding 15 points to the scoreboard in the win. Amesha Miller pulled down six rebounds to lead the team on the boards. The team finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 36 percent from long range while going 9-for-10 from the foul line.

The Panthers are undefeated in conference play at 4-0 for a spot atop the CIAA Northern Division standings. The Panthers have not played in almost two weeks after their last game was canceled, but they have won six games in a row with the most recent being an 82-53 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg their last time out to bring their overall record to 10-3. Taniyah Greene and Rori Cox breached the 20-point mark with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Tatiana Jones led the Panthers on the boards with a game-high 18 rebounds and Nakeria Scales earned a double-double in the win with 16 points and 10 rebounds. While the team was able to win the game, there is room for improvement as the team only shot 42 percent from the field, 37 percent from beyond the arc and just 40 percent from the foul line.

Virginia Union and Virginia State have met a total of 32 times and the series is all tied up at 16-16. The teams met twice last season with the first meeting going in Virginia Union’s favor with a 70-56 victory and Virginia State taking the second game with a narrow 61-57 victory.
