West Virginia will begin NCAA Tournament play on Saturday afternoon with a first-round game against Columbia at Carmichael Arena.

March Madness is underway in women’s basketball and on Saturday afternoon, the 11th-seeded Columbia Lions will try to pull off an upset over the sixth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers as they meet at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Lions made it into the NCAA Tournament after defeating Washington 63-60 on Thursday in a play-in game. The team finished the regular season at the top of the Ivy League standings, but fell to Harvard in the Ivy League tournament to finish as runners-up. Despite that, the selection committee gave them a chance to go dancing and the team succeeded. Against the Huskies, Riley Weiss posted 24 points to lead the Lions offensively while Cecelia Collins and Kitty Henderson added 12 and 11 points, respectively, to help earn the win and an official spot in the 64-team bracket.

The Mountaineers’ automatic bid was snatched away from them during the Big 12 Tournament after TCU picked up a 71-65 win in the semifinals. JJ Quinerly led the Mountaineers’ scoring efforts, finishing with 20 points while Sydney Shaw and Kylee Blacksten each added 11 points to the scoreboard. While the team finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field and 47 percent from long range, TCU pulled away at the end and West Virginia couldn’t find an answer. The selection committee, however, wanted to see more from the 24-7 Mountaineers and gave them a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

West Virginia and Columbia have only met once in their history and the game took place way back in 2007 when the teams met in Florida. The Mountaineers won handily in a 74-41 victory.
