No. 17 TCU and No. 19 West Virginia clash Sunday in a high stakes showdown for first place in the Big 12 standings in women’s college basketball.

West Virginia goes for its fifth win in a row when it travels for this Big 12 showdown against TCU on Sunday night. The Mountaineers are 21-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play. It will help WVU’s cause tonight that it is an impressive 7-1 on the road. That conference mark puts West Virginia at the top of the Big 12 standings. The team closest behind the Mountaineers is, of course, the Horned Frogs. TCU has a better overall record, sitting at 22-4, and the Horned Frogs are right behind in the conference at 10-3. The great news for TCU coming into this game is that it is a perfect 15-0 at home, so the Horned Frogs should be the automatic favorite on that stat alone. These two have already played one another this season, and the game couldn’t have been closer than No. 10 TCU eeking out a 51-50 victory on the road on Jan. 14. Marta Suarez played the hero for the Horned Frogs, hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer. Suarez was 3-for-18 before hitting the game-winning shot to continue persevering. The last time TCU won on the road against West Virginia was in 2020.

TCU bounced back from a one-point loss of its own last Sunday on the road at Colorado by beating No. 12 Baylor in Waco, 83-67, on Thursday. The Horned Frogs got off to a fast start, outscoring the Bears 21-12 in the first quarter. TCU outscored Baylor by nine again in the third quarter to put the game away after the Bears rallied in the second. The headline by far, though, was the performance turned in by Olivia Miles, who put up a game-high 50 points. Miles hit an astonishing 10 three-pointers to shoot at 50 percent from behind the arc, and she had seven of them and scored 23 in the third quarter alone. Miles and Suarez combined to score as many as Baylor did combined.

West Virginia absolutely dominated for its fourth straight victory, beating UCF, 106-56, at home on Wednesday. It was the most points the Mountaineers have ever scored against a conference opponent in program history. It is also the third time that WVU has surpassed the century mark this season. The biggest difference in the game was the Mountaineers’ dominant defense, which forced 23 turnovers and turned them into 41 points. There were six West Virginia players to reach double digits, with the team shooting at 56 percent from the field. Riley Makalusky led all Mountaineers with 20 points. Expect another very close game against TCU in this season’s series finale.
