A cross-state battle will take place on Saturday as Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth meet in women’s college hockey action.

On Saturday afternoon, Minnesota Duluth will host cross-state rival Minnesota in a WCHA matchup at AMSOIL Arena for the teams’ second game in as many days. The Bulldogs came into the weekend with an overall record of 6-3-1 and a conference record of 5-2-1 which puts them in third place in the conference standings with 17 points. Most recently, the team took on Minnesota State-Mankato in a two-game series in which the Bulldogs won the first game 4-1 and earned a 3-3 draw in the second. The first period was scoreless, but the Mavericks came out hot in the second and got on the board within two minutes. Tova Henderson responded quickly to make it a 1-1 game. The third quarter saw four goals, beginning with the go-ahead for the Mavericks. Olivia Wallin countered to make it a 2-2 game before Clara Van Wieren gave the Bulldogs the lead with less than two minutes left. The Mavericks scored just 21 seconds later to tie things up and that’s where the score remained.

The Golden Gophers are sitting just behind the Bulldogs in the WCHA standings with 12 points collected from a record of 4-3-1 in conference play and 8-3-1 overall. The team has started to put things together and have won four straight games with the most recent being a 4-1 victory over Bemidji State on Saturday.

Four first-period goals, three of which came from power plays, allowed the Gophers to jump out to a 4-0 lead and the Beavers could not recover. While Bemidji did find the back of the net in the second period, strong defensive play from the Gophers anchored by Hannah Clark and Sophia Johnson’s combined nine saves allowed for the team to keep its win streak alive.

Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth will meet a total of four times this season. Ahead of Friday night’s game, Minnesota held a 35-8-5 advantage in the series. Last season, the Golden Gophers won three of the four meetings with the other game being a 1-1 draw.
