No. 3 Minnesota looks to complete a 2-game WCHA sweep of St. Thomas on Saturday at Ridder Arena

No. 3 Minnesota (16-5-1) got back to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association grind on Friday night with a win on home ice and on Saturday looks to complete a weekend sweep of St. Thomas (5-14-2) when the teams meet again at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers are third in the WCHA race at 10-4-1 with 30 points, one back of second-place Minnesota Duluth. The Tommies, at 2-12-1, have only nine points and are seventh in the eight-team circuit, three points clear of Bemidji State. St. Thomas is winless since Nov. 7 and is 0-9-1 in that span.

Minnesota took control of the game on Friday night with three second-period goals en route to a 4-2 victory. Emma Kreisz assisted on all four tallies while Ava Lindsey had a goal and assist in the win. Abbey Murphy leads the team with 17 goals and 37 points while Natalie Mlynkova has 12 goals on the season. Hannah Clark has appeared in net for 17 games, starting 16, and owns a 1.92 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

The Tommies got the deficit to 3-2 with third-period goals from Nora Sauer and Maddy Clough before the Golden Gophers got a late power-play goal. Madison Brown’s nine goals and 13 points top the squad, while Cara Sajevic and Rylee Bartz have five markers apiece. Dani Strom has a 3.54 GAA and .896 save percentage in 16 starts.

St. Thomas moved up to Division I for the 2021-22 season from Division III. Interim coach Bethany Brausen is running the program after Joel Johnson resigned on Nov. 19. Minnesota has played in the last three NCAA tournaments, with coach Brad Frost sporting a 510-107-42 record in his 18th season with four national championships in that span.
