No. 8 St. Cloud State returns home on Saturday for a rematch with St. Thomas after a Friday night draw

No. 8 St. Cloud State (6-1-2) salvaged a tie Friday night with a third-period goal and returns home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud on Saturday afternoon for a rematch with St. Thomas (4-2-1). The Huskies are now 2-1-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association, with their nine points putting them fourth in the race, with the Tommies at 2-2-1 and in fifth place with eight points. St. Thomas is in its third Division I season while St. Cloud State is still chasing its first NCAA tournament bid since its debut in 1998-99.

Avery Farrell scored an unassisted goal for the Huskies with 5:08 left in regulation time to salvage a 1-1 tie on Friday night at St. Thomas after the teams played two scoreless overtime periods. Emilia Kyrkkö stopped 27 shots in the contest.

The Tommies broke a scoreless tie 4:14 into the second period when Maddie Brown scored off an assist from Maddy Clough. Dani Strom finished with 25 saves in the draw and St. Thomas picked up the extra point when Haley Maxwell found the net in the sixth round of the shootout.

Brown’s four goals lead St. Thomas and she shares the team scoring lead of six points with Chloe Boreen. Calla Frank is 3-1-0 in four starts with a .927 save percentage and 2.00 goals-against average. Emma Gentry tops St. Cloud State with four goals and six points. In five starts, Sanni Ahola is 4-1-0 with a .934 save percentage and 1.60 GAA.

Coach Joel Johnston is 27-82-6 in his fourth season leading the Tommies while Huskies coach Brian Idalski is 24-19-3 in his second year at the helm.
