The Iona Gaels upset their way to the MAAC Tournament Championship to take on the Fairfield Stags. Watch free on Fubo.

For the eighth straight season Fairfield (10-7) is back in the MAAC Championship game. The Stags entered this tournament as the second-seed and looking to bounce back after losing in the championship game last season. They had won five straight conference championships in a row before that loss, an MAAC record. In-between the Stags and a ninth MAAC Tournament Championship is four-seed Iona (12-5) who pulled off the upset of the tournament in the semifinals. The Gaels knocked off the tournament’s top-seed Mount St. Mary’s to make their first ever MAAC Tournament Championship. The Gaels will need more magic here against the most successful team in MAAC women’s college lacrosse history.

In the semifinals the Gaels pulled off the upset 11-10 over the Mountaineers. They got off to a strong start and closed even stronger in a game that came down to one final attempt by the top-seed Mountaineers to try and force overtime bouncing off the goal post.

The Gaels scored the first five goals of the game and then four of the last five to close out the win. For the Stags, they weathered an early flurry from three-seed Sienna and a late push for a 16-12 win in the semifinals.

This is the first game of the season between the teams despite being conference rivals. The Gaels were eliminated in the first round last year and before this season had gone winless in the MAAC Tournament. Since the tournament began the Gaels had gone 0-6 in their previous six tournament appearances.
