Third-seed Northwestern takes on Penn in the first quarterfinal of the NCAA women’s college lacrosse Tournament on Thursday.
The quarterfinals of the 2025 NCAA Tournament in women’s college lacrosse starts on Thursday with third-seed Northwestern trying to reach the semifinals for the sixth straight season. The Wildcats won their eighth National Championship in 2023 and finished as the runner-up last season. They are challenged by Penn, one of three unseeded teams in the quarterfinals this season. The Quakers earned their way to the quarterfinals with upset wins over Army (16-6) in the first round and six-seeded Maryland (11-10) in a double-overtime second round thriller. The winner of this game will move on to take on the winner of second-seed Boston College and seven-seed Yale, who play in the third quarterfinal of the day.

This season the Quakers finished 16-3 and ranked eighth in the country. They entered the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning nine straight games to close the regular season, winning the Ivy League Tournament and into the NCAA Tournament.
For the Wildcats this season they closed the regular season third in the country and have won nine straight. In the second round they routed Michigan 15-7 to get back to the quarterfinals.
The offense has been on fire, scoring 15 or more goals in eight of the nine wins. Seven of those wins have come by at least eight goals, including wins over five teams ranked at the time. They have been unstoppable heading into this quarterfinal matchup.
