Alabama and Vanderbilt will look to extend their season with a win in the first round of the SEC tournament in women’s college soccer on Sunday night.

SEC tournament play is underway, and on Sunday night, No. 12 seed Alabama will look to pull off an upset over No. 5 seed Vanderbilt to move into the quarterfinal round of play in women’s college soccer. The Crimson Tide just barely made it into the conference tournament with their SEC record of 2-3-5, but the team finished the regular season with a commendable overall record of 9-5-5. Alabama will be familiar with Vanderbilt’s style of play, as the teams met in the regular season finale last weekend. The game went in the Commodores’ favor with a 3-1 victory. Alabama’s lone goal was scored by Gianna Paul to open the game, but three unanswered goals from Vanderbilt sealed the deal.

The Commodores finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-2-6 and SEC play with a record of 4-2-4. The team finished the regular season with a seven-game unbeaten streak, the most recent being that 3-1 victory over Alabama. After playing a scoreless first half, the Crimson Tide opened the scoring, forcing the Commodores to play from behind. The first goal was scored by Alabama in the 46th minute, but Vanderbilt evened the score just four minutes later with a goal from Ella Eggleston. In the 78th minute, Caroline Betts scored what ended up being the game winner and Courtney Jones added an insurance goal with five minutes remaining in the game.

While Vanderbilt has had much better results against conference opponents than Alabama has had this season, tournament atmosphere brings about a different kind of motivation. Tune in on Sunday night to see which of these two teams will move onto quarterfinal play in which it will play fourth-seeded South Carolina.
