Cal and Duke will meet in the penultimate weekend of regular season play on Sunday as both teams try to break losing streaks.

The regular season is coming to a close and Cal and Duke will look to break their respective losing streaks on Sunday when the teams meet at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. The Golden Bears are currently tied for ninth place in the ACC standings with a conference record of 4-13 and an overall record of 12-17. The team is on a two-match losing streak with the most recent being a four-set loss to North Carolina.

Against the Tar Heels, the Golden Bears started off strong, winning the first set 25-22, but UNC came back to win the next three 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19 for a home victory. Xuemeng (Maggie) Li led the Cal offense with 20 kills and was the only Bear with double figure kills. Natalie Lau supported offensive play with 33 assists and added six digs to the stat sheet. Defensively, the team struggled to handle UNC’s hitters, allowing the Tar Heels to hit .333 in comparison to the Bears’ own hitting percentage of .171. Sophia Johnson came up with a team-high eight digs, but the Tar Heels’ pressure was too much to endure.

The Blue Devils are just above the Golden Bears in the standings with a conference record of 5-12 and an overall record of 9-19, but the team has struggled recently and bring a five-match losing streak into Sunday’s contest. On Friday night, the team hosted ACC newcomer Stanford and fell in straight sets. The Cardinal held the Blue Devils to a hitting percentage of .215 which was led by Taylor Williams 10 kills. Grace Penn supported offensive play with 19 assists, but the hitters struggled to finish against a strong Stanford defense.

Sunday’s match will be the third meeting between Cal and Duke with the last being played back in 2007. The series is currently tied at one win per side and Cal took the last win in a four-set victory.
