Michigan State is still in search of its first Big Ten win and will look to do so against Illinois at home on Saturday.

On Saturday night, Illinois will travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State in a Big Ten matchup at the Breslin Center. The Spartans have struggled this season and are still in search of their illusive first conference win as the team brings an overall record of 7-9 and a conference record of 0-5 into Saturday’s contest. The team has lost six straight games with the most recent taking place last night against No. 3 Penn State in a straight set defeat. Against the Nittany Lions, the Spartans had a very difficult time producing offense and only hit for .135 as a team. Akasha Anderson finished the game with a team-high seven kills, but with no one even breaching the double digit mark, there was just no way to fight back.

The Fighting Illini have only fared slightly better in conference play so far and came into this weekend with an overall record of 9-5 and a conference record of 1-3 for a spot toward the bottom of the Big Ten standings. Ahead of a pair of weekend games against Michigan last night and Michigan State tonight, the team picked up its first win of conference play against Northwestern in a four set victory at home. Ashlyn Philpot led the team offensively against the Wildcats, finishing the game with 14 kills, but Raina Terry was right on her heels with a 13-kill night. The team played well defensively, also, holding Northwestern to a hitting percentage of .136. Christina Martinez Mundo led the defense with 15 kills while Brooke Mosher and Lily Barry were also in double digits with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The last time Michigan State and Illinois met was during last year’s regular season and the game was a hard fought battle that resulted in a five-set win for Illinois at home.
