Michigan State will look to knock off No. 10 Purdue on Sunday night when the teams meet in Big Ten women’s volleyball action.

On Sunday night, Michigan State will look to pull off a huge upset over No. 10 Purdue on its way to its first Big Ten win of the 2024 season. The Spartans are currently 0-3 in conference play with an overall record of 7-7 for a spot in an eighth place tie in the Big Ten standings. The team is on a four match losing streak with the most recent being a four-set loss to Indiana on Friday night in Bloomington. The Spartans fell in the first two sets (25-21, 25-21) before winning the third (25-19). The Hoosiers battled back, however, and secured the win with a 25-22 win in the fourth. Akasha Anderson finished the match with 13 kills to lead the MSU offense, receiving assistance from Julia Bishop, who finished the game with a season-high 36 assists. Nalani Iosia led the way defensively with 20 digs, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Hoosiers who hit .201 in the win.

The Boilermakers are tied for fourth place in the Big Ten with a conference record of 2-1 and an overall record of 11-3. All three of the team’s losses this season have come against opponents ranked in the top 10 at the time of play. The team opened Big Ten play against No. 4 Penn State, falling in straight sets, but the Boilermakers bounced back to beat No. 16 Minnesota in a five-set thriller, and most recently got a win against Northwestern in a four-set victory on the road. Four Purdue hitters finished the match with double digit kills, led by Kenna Wollard who hit .438 with 18 kills. Ali Hornung held down the defense with 18 digs, but Eva Hudson added 16 digs to the stat sheet to go along with 13 kills for a double-double. The team held Northwestern to .153 hitting to earn its second straight win.

Purdue has won the last three matches against Michigan State with the most recent being a straight set victory in East Lansing to close out the 2023 season. Tune in Sunday to see if the Spartans can break their losing streak and earn their first ranked win and Big Ten win of the season.
