Stanford scheduled four matches for its trip to Milwaukee, bookending the showcase appearance with road contests against Milwaukee and No. 24 Marquette.

In the Cardinal’s five-set slugfest (26-28, 25-23, 16-25, 25-13, 15-13) against the Golden Gophers, junior outside hitter Elia Rubin led the way with 19 kills, 13 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces. Kami Miner added 47 assists and 17 digs, while Jordyn Harvey served up seven aces to go with 12 kills and a block. Stanford had beaten Milwaukee in straight sets on Friday.

The Badgers took their second straight loss to open the season after falling in four sets at No. 6 Louisville on Tuesday. After hanging with the defending national champion Longhorns early, Texas ran away for a four-set victory (28-30, 25-23, 15-25, 11-25) on Sunday afternoon.

Sarah Franklin, the national player of the year last season, finished with 25 kills while also recording nine digs and an ace. Lola Schumacher dug out 16 balls while Devyn Robinson notched four blocks.

Stanford has made three straight NCAA tournament appearances and has made 42 of 43 tourneys since the NCAA began sponsoring the sport in 1981. The last of the Cardinal’s nine NCAA titles came in 2019. Wisconsin won the national championship in 2021 and has played in the last 11 national tournaments since coach Kelly Sheffield arrived in 2013.
