On Friday night, Washington State will head to Seattle to play Washington in the first game of the Husky Invitational at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Cougars are currently 3-2 on the season and have won three in a row after dropping their first two games. The team’s most recent match was played against Eastern Washington and was pushed to five sets before Washington State secured the win. Katy Ryan led the offense for the Cougars and finished the game with 20 kills on 48 swings. Defensively, Italia Bernal recorded a 20-dig match to help hold Eastern Washington to a hitting percentage of .231.

The Huskies have been perfect so far this season and bring a record of 5-0 into their tournament this weekend. The team’s most recent matches were played in Boulder, Colorado at the Buffs Classic where it took on Fresno State (3-0), Georgia (3-2) and host Colorado (3-2). Senior Kiune Fletcher was named tournament MVP after finishing the weekend with a total of 34 kills in the tournament. Against the Buffaloes, she had a weekend-high 13 kills and turned in six blocks at the net. Lauren Bays added 18 digs and six assists to the stat sheet to help her team earn the win against Colorado and, ultimately, the tournament title. The team’s strong start to the season has it right on the cusp of breaking into the top 25 ahead of the start of conference play.
Washington and Washington State met twice last season and the Cougars took both games in sweeps. Washington State has won the last three meetings with the Huskies and holds a record of 12-32 against its in-state rival.
