New Mexico State looks to defend home court and win back-to-back in the Borderland Classic on Saturday against Pacific.

New Mexico State hosts Pacific for the last match of the Borderland Classic on Saturday night. The tournament did not start the way New Mexico State hoped, as UTEP swept them 3-0 on Thursday. But the Aggies rallied in their second match of the weekend to earn a 3-2 win over UC San Diego on Friday to avoid a three-match losing streak. New Mexico State improved to 2-2 at home with the victory in Game 2, and the Aggies are now 5-4 overall as they try to win back-to-back matches this weekend. UNMS will head out on the road next week for the Bradley Tournament in Peoria, IL, where the Aggies will take on Bradley in the second game of that tournament. New Mexico State is coming off a resilient matchup against UC San Diego, where the Aggies had to keep fighting back. The Tritons won the first set, but the Aggies fought back to win the second 25-20. UC San Diego won the third set by the same score, but the Aggies bounced back once again to narrowly win the fourth set 25-23. That momentum translated into the final set, where New Mexico State prevailed 15-11. The team produced 68 kills on the night, and it was the Aggies’ second five-set match win of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Jaelynn Kohli had a standout performance, with a career-high 19 kills. That is the highest kill total in a single match for any New Mexico State player this season. It was a lot to hang their hat on, but can the Aggies take advantage and defend home court one more time in this tournament finale?

Pacific is split this season with a perfect 4-0 record at home and a 0-3 record on the road. The Tigers will seek their first road win tonight against New Mexico State. Their road losing streak continued in the Borderland Classic, but Pacific played in El Paso, TX, against UTEP and lost 3-0 on Friday. Las Cruces, NM, is relatively close to El Paso, TX, but the travel will undoubtedly affect the Tigers, especially since Pacific will return to El Paso for the third and final game of this tournament against UC San Diego. The Tigers did not get off to a good start on Friday, falling in three sets to UTEP. The second set was the closest, but it was a tough match for Pacific, falling 25-17, 25-22, 25-19. Pacific was held to its second-fewest kills of the season, but Nicole Zake led the squad with nine and finished with 10 digs, nearly reaching a double-double. Unfortunately for the Tigers, it doesn’t get much easier tonight against the host of this tournament in yet another road match.
