Youngstown State will travel to Rochester, Michigan, on Thursday night for a men’s college basketball showdown against Oakland in a battle of two Horizon League schools at the OU Credit Union O’rena. The Youngstown State Penguins are 14-10 overall this season and have fallen to the middle of the pack in the conference with an 8-5 record in the Horizon League. They are tied with Robert Morris and a half-game behind Milwaukee. They are also 3.5 games behind the conference-leading Cleveland State at 11-1.

They closed out January with one of those eight conference wins, by two points over Wright State. EJ Farmer led the team with 23 points, tying a game-high on 8-of-16 shooting. They opened up February with one of those five conference losses by six points at home to IU Indy. Farmer dropped 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting, just one point shy of the game-high.

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are 10-14 overall this season heading into the latter half of this week. They are surprisingly 7-6 against teams in the conference. They are one game behind their opponent in the horizon League and 4.5 games under the conference leader. They are one game over Wright State as well.

Similar to Youngstown State, they ended January with a win at home against Green Bay 68-54. In the 14-point win, DQ Cole led the team and the game with 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting and a team-high three assists. They stayed at home welcoming in Northern Kentucky over the weekend and lost by nine points. Tuburu Naivalurua led the team with 18 points in that loss.
