Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper), two Harley-riding hippies, complete a drug deal in Southern California and decide to travel cross-country in search of spiritual truth. On their journey, they experience bigotry and hatred from the inhabitants of small-town America and also meet with other travelers seeking alternative lifestyles. After a terrifying drug experience in New Orleans, the two travelers wonder if they will ever find a way to live peacefully in America.
Broke and without work, newspaper reporter Eddie Willis (Humphrey Bogart) agrees to work for the corrupt boxing promoter Nick Benko (Rod Steiger) to help hype his new boxer, Toro Moreno (Mike Lane). While Toro is beastly in appearance, he has no actual boxing talent, and all his fights are fixed. When Toro gets a shot at the title against the brutal Buddy Brannen (Max Baer), Willis is faced with the tough decision of whether to tell Toro that his entire career is a sham.

Christopher Pride (Jerry Lewis) has been offered an important commission in Paris but can't convince his girlfriend, Dr. Elizabeth Acord (Janet Leigh), to take some time off from her psychiatric practice. Elizabeth is worried about three of her female patients, all of whom are extremely hostile toward men and very needy. Christopher, anxious to leave for France, decides to impersonate the ideal man for each of Elizabeth's patients, in hopes of lessening their dependency on her.
When his impoverished past is uncovered, Matt Howard is promptly fired by the Peytons, a wealthy family in Williamsburg during the Revolutionary War era. Now, Francie, whom the boys call Gidget -- short for girl midget -- wants to learn how to surf, so she buys a used board and dives into the sunny world of Southern California surfing fever.
After lonely, middle-aged woman Millicent Wetherby (Joan Crawford) meets the vibrant and young Burt Hanson (Cliff Robertson) at a restaurant, they go out on a date. Although Millicent is wary of their age difference, she eventually marries him. Soon she is shocked to encounter Virginia (Vera Miles), Burt's ex-wife. Virginia claims that Burt is mentally unstable, which is later backed by Burt's father (Lorne Greene). Confused and scared, Millicent tries to learn the truth about her new husband.
