The Jolson Story
At the turn of the 20th century, young Asa Yoelson (Scotty Beckett) decides to go against the wishes of his cantor father (Ludwig Donath) and pursue a career in show business. Gradually working his way up through the vaudeville ranks, Asa -- now calling himself Al Jolson (Larry Parks) -- joins a blackface minstrel troupe and soon builds a reputation as a consummate performer. But as his career grows in size, so does his ego, resulting in battles in business as well as in his personal life.
Mickey One
Stand-up comic Mickey One (Warren Beatty) is fearful that the gambling debts he amassed have made him a marked man in the Detroit clubs that he frequents. Assuming a false identity, Mickey flees to Chicago, where he cautiously resumes his career at the upscale Club Xanadu. When club owner Ed Castle (Hurd Hatfield) offers Mickey a shot at auditioning for an unknown man with reputed connections in the Midwest, the increasingly paranoid Mickey fears that the mob has finally closed in on him.
Pal Joey
Joey Evans (Frank Sinatra) is a philandering San Francisco-based singer with big dreams of starting his own nightclub, Chez Joey, but chasing women keeps him even more occupied. Despite making a meaningful connection with lovely chorus girl Linda English (Kim Novak), it doesn't stop him from seducing the wealthy widow, and ex-burlesque dancer, Vera Simpson (Rita Hayworth), who he hopes will bankroll his club. Ultimately, Joey has to decide who -- and what -- he most wants in life.
The Fuller Brush Man
Clumsy sanitation worker Red Jones (Red Skelton) is fired from his street-cleaning job shortly after his girlfriend, Ann Elliot (Janet Blair), refuses his marriage proposal until he betters himself. While training to become a door-to-door salesman, he accidentally stumbles into a murder investigation when the corrupt sanitation commissioner (Nicholas Joy) who had fired him is killed. When the murder weapon is found to be one of the brushes Red sells, he must fight to prove his innocence.
It Had to Be You
Society girl Victoria Stafford (Ginger Rogers) garners a reputation for leaving men at the altar. Getting engaged for a fourth time, Victoria believes she's found the right man -- until on a train she has a strange dream about a Native American who claims that he is her true love. Awakening, Victoria is startled to find the dream man, George (Cornel Wilde), who claims to really exist, while also being a figment of her imagination. Back at home, George guides Victoria to a startling discovery.
All Ashore
Sailors Joe (Dick Haymes) and Skip (Ray McDonald) habitually take advantage of their shipmate, Moby (Mickey Rooney), who's robbed after they take him to a shady bar. When they have no money to go to Catalina Island, Calif., Joe arranges their travel by volunteering the clueless Moby to work on the ship. Skip later meets a glamorous dancer (Peggy Ryan), while Joe woos a nightclub owner (Jody Lawrance). Moby decides to leave, but finds himself coming to the rescue of a beautiful heiress.
You Were Never Lovelier
Bob Davis (Fred Astaire), an American dancer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, finds himself desperate for work after losing all his money. He takes a gig at a wedding, hoping to impress the bride's father, Eduardo Acuña (Adolphe Menjou), a local club owner who has decreed that his daughters must marry in order of age. Eduardo eventually agrees to allow Bob to perform at his club, but only under the condition that he play suitor to his second-oldest daughter, the beautiful Maria (Rita Hayworth).
