Advertising executive William Weldon (Franchot Tone) narrowly averts career implosion when his clever wife, Margaret (Lucille Ball), helps him save an important advertising account. But tensions run high in the Weldon household after William's fast-talking employer, J.B. Cruikshank (Edward Everett Horton), invites Margaret to work for him too. The cunning couple must compete with each other to write a campaign for Emil Glinka (Mikhail Rasumny) -- a mad scientist with an alarming new product.

When down-to-earth secretary Laura Partridge (Judy Holliday) asks some highly pertinent but embarrassing questions at the stockholders' meeting of a major New York corporation, the company's arrogant board of directors tries to buy her silence with a cushy position in shareholder relations. The scheme backfires, however, when Laura falls in love with the company's gruff CEO (Paul Douglas) and makes herself the leader of an all-out shareholders' revolt.

Hamlet's unstable behavior troubles his love, Ophelia (Marianne Faithfull), who is further shaken by the death of her father, Polonius (Mark Dignam). Clumsy sanitation worker Red Jones (Red Skelton) is fired from his street-cleaning job shortly after his girlfriend, Ann Elliot (Janet Blair), refuses his marriage proposal until he betters himself. While training to become a door-to-door salesman, he accidentally stumbles into a murder investigation when the corrupt sanitation commissioner (Nicholas Joy) who had fired him is killed. When the murder weapon is found to be one of the brushes Red sells, he must fight to prove his innocence.

It Happened to Jane

The court case generates lots of publicity and Osgood is famous. A charismatic news reporter (Steve Forrest) takes to Osgood, but that doesn't sit well with Denham, who also has eyes for her.
