Fire Down Below
Set in the Caribbean, U.S. expatriates Tony (Jack Lemmon) and Felix (Robert Mitchum) cruise around the ocean and eke out a meager subsistence using their small trawling boat to transport cargo. When they take on the job of smuggling illegal-immigrant beauty Irena (Rita Hayworth) to another island, the two friends find their friendship torn apart by their mutual romantic feelings toward her. Though jealousy has split them apart, fate intervenes to bring the two back together.

Society girl Victoria Stafford (Ginger Rogers) garners a reputation for leaving men at the altar. Getting engaged for a fourth time, Victoria believes she's found the right man -- until on a train she has a strange dream about a Native American who claims that he is her true love. American Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) recently received his degree in engineering, but cannot find work. To make ends meet, he takes a job as a teacher in a rough London East End school populated mostly with troublemakers who were rejected from other schools for their behavior. While the students at first see Thackeray as just another teacher open for ridicule and bullying, his calm demeanor and desire to see them succeed gradually earn him their respect.

Matt Drayton (Spencer Tracy) and his wife Christina (Katharine Hepburn) are wealthy liberals who must confront the latent racism the coming marriage arouses. Also attending the Draytons' dinner are Prentice's parents (Roy E. Glenn Sr., Beah Richards), who vehemently disapprove of the relationship.
