She must hide her identity from the residents of her small, conservative Connecticut town, who disapprove of the book. When Theodora falls for Michael, she soon finds that he has secrets of his own.

But when several more performers meet gruesome deaths, it becomes apparent they are no accidents, and there's a killer on the loose.

Sheriff Calder (Marlon Brando) wants to capture Reeves alive, which puts him in opposition to many of the townspeople who have resorted to mob justice. Businessman Val Rogers (E.G. Marshall) wants Calder to apprehend Reeves quickly, through any means, since he fears the criminal will come after Val's son, Jake, who is sleeping with Reeves' wife (Jane Fonda).

Later, at a party at Max's villa, investigator Carliss (George Sanders) arrives with news that Gina has been killed and that Max is a murderer suspect.
