Dreamer George Lester (Jerry Lewis) continually focuses on outrageous ways to make cash, and his fed-up wife, Pamela (Jacqueline Pearce), finally decides to leave him. To impress her, he converts their home into a swinging dance club -- but she is mortified when she returns. Undeterred, George enlists his grifter buddy H. Also attending the Draytons' dinner are Prentice's parents (Roy E. Glenn Sr., Beah Richards), who vehemently disapprove of the relationship.

When hard-charging New York newspaper editor Walter Burns discovers that his ex-wife, investigative reporter Hildy Johnson, has gotten engaged to milquetoast insurance agent Bruce Baldwin, he unsuccessfully tries to lure her away from tame domestic life with a story about the impending execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams.
