Former Union soldier John Parrish (Glenn Ford) wants to sell his ranch and start a new life by settling down out east. However, the ruthless tactics of Lew Wilkison (Edward G. Robinson), the scheming businessman interested in his property, make Parrish reconsider the move, especially after one of his ranch hands is murdered. Adding to the increasingly tense conflict is Wilkison's wife, Martha (Barbara Stanwyck), who is cheating on her husband with his brother, Cole (Brian Keith).

After riding into New Mexico, William Bonney (Scott Brady) and Pat Garrett (James Griffith) are hired by rancher John Tunstall (Paul Cavanagh). Bonney's hard work wins Tunstall over, but his romance with the old man's niece makes foreman Bob Ollinger (Alan Hale Jr.) jealous. Learning of Bonney's criminal past, Ollinger leads a posse against him that kills Tunstall instead. Bonney vows to avenge his boss' death, and his ensuing killing spree earns him the nickname "Billy the Kid."

Journeying from Mexico back home to West Texas, mercenary Tom Buchanan (Randolph Scott) takes a break for the night in the border town of Agry. He soon discovers that almost every resident -- from the crooked sheriff (Barry Kelley) to the shifty-eyed innkeeper -- is a member of the prominent Agry family. When Buchanan defends Juan de la Vega (Manuel Rojas), a young man about to be lynched for shooting the town drunk, he himself is accused of murder and must struggle to escape town alive.

The Bandit of Zhobe

After Maj. Crowley (Norman Wooland) arrests the warrior Kasim Khan (Victor Mature) under suspicion of attacking British troops, Khan escapes. While he is away, a rival warlord, Azhad Khan, dresses his troops as British soldiers and attacks Kasim's village, killing his family. Thinking that the British are behind the attack, Kasim wages war against them. Only Crowley's daughter, Zena (Anne Aubrey), with help from her guard, Stokes (Anthony Newley), sees that Kasim is not the enemy.

After fighting for the Union during the Civil War, Luke Fargo (Van Heflin) is greeted with resentment when he returns home to his small southern town. Luke has a reputation as a rogue, but he's reinvented himself as a man of God and plans to fix up the town's damaged church. Recalling their romantic past, Georgina Decrais (Allison Hayes) tries to reclaim Luke. But, to the dismay of some suspicious townspeople, he concentrates on mentoring an unsophisticated young woman, Lissy (Joanne Woodward).
