Because of his background as a local youth who spent time living with the Cutlers, Eddie gets the benefit of the doubt from Ben's daughter and his wife-to-be, Ruth (Margaret Hayes). Ben is firm in his belief that Eddie is guilty, and as the matter is debated in a divisive court battle, it will soon become clear whether he's right.

So these desperate people hire a dedicated new sheriff, Tex Miller (Glenn Ford), to bring this ruffian to justice. But, for all his determination, Tex is tricked by Pete and led into an ambush. Ultimately, it is the wily and brassy transplant Belinda "Bill" Pendergast (Penny Singleton) who uncovers Pete's true identity and plots a way to run him out of town once and for all.
