While at the racetrack, actor Spence (Ted Danson) overhears two mobsters plotting to fix a race by injecting a horse with steroids. When Spence and his friend Dennis (Howie Mandel) try to bet on the juiced horse, mob boss Tony Pazzo (Paul Sorvino) orders his goons to silence the duo forever. To make matters worse, Spence starts having an affair with Pazzo's wife, Claudia (Maria Conchita Alonso), and the police begin investigating recent events at the racetrack.
Armando Sancho is a former Los Angeles gang member who has transitioned into law enforcement. In late 1940s Los Angeles, Easy Rawlins is an unemployed black World War II veteran with few job prospects. At a bar, Easy meets DeWitt Albright, a mysterious white man looking for someone to investigate the disappearance of a missing white woman named Daphne Monet, who he suspects is hiding out in one of the city's black jazz clubs. Strapped for money and facing house payments, Easy takes the job, but soon finds himself in over his head.
Charlie (Woody Harrelson) is a New York City transit cop with a mountain of gambling debts, and John (Wesley Snipes) is his responsible, and frequently exasperated, foster brother. They compete amicably for the affections of fellow officer Grace (Jennifer Lopez), but things become more serious when Charlie decides to rob the "money train" that carries the Transit Authority's daily proceeds. John must decide whether to prevent Charlie's crime or to join in on the heist.
