The defendant, Melody Farris, was charged with murder, aggravated assault, concealing a death, making a false statement in the shooting death of her husband, Gary. Prosecutors gave their murder timeline on how Melody murdered her husband of 38 years and then tried to cover it up. Initially, police thought Gary had a medical emergency and accidentally fell into a fire.

According to prosecutors in their opening statements, money was the motive for this murder. Next, Melody Farris' defense delivered their opening remarks to the jury. They claimed police acted on confirmation bias when they allegedly narrowed erroneously on the defendant for the death of her husband, Gary. A complicated family coupled with a complicated police investigation all led to fingers pointing at Melody Farris for first-degree murder.

Melody Farris' defense pointed to reasonable doubt in their opening statements to the jury. Her attorney was convinced the State doesn't have incontrovertible evidence that she killed her husband. Next, jurors heard the 911 call that identified the charred body of the victim was called in by his son. On the stand, was the paramedic who was called to the scene. Investigators found Gary Farris' remains in a fiery pit roughly 15 feet wide and five inches deep.

The responding paramedic answered questions under cross examination. The initial 911 call came from her son who identified the burnt body of Gary Farris, his father. Next, prosecutors called in a crime scene technician. Lieutenant Lee Stewart processed the crime scene where the burnt up remains of Gary Farris was found buried on his own property.

Police uncovered hundreds of pieces of physical evidence in this case. On the stand was the crime scene technician who processed the scene where Gary Farris' remains were found. The evidence collected included were blood, charred human remains, fingerprints and even the fatal bullet. According to the crime scene technician's testimony, the fatal bullet that killed Gary Farris was found in the ribs of his human remains.

The death of John O'Keefe took a mental toll on the State's key witness. Jennifer McCabe was with the defendant when they found the victim in the snow. She was the one who called 911 to try to save him. The Defense tried to poke holes in her testimony by asking her a number of accusatory questions asserting that she is covering up what happened to her friend, O'Keefe. McCabe told the jury: I never would have left John O'Keefe out in the cold to die because he was my friend that I loved.

One of those versions was that he was killed when a snowplow hit him. Jennifer McCabe wrapped up her testimony on the stand by expounding for the jury what she and her family went through. She told them that they have experienced constant harassment in person and on social media. She called it a social media witch hunt.

Lorena Bobbitt continued answering questions under cross-examination. She reiterated her point that she mutilated her husband, John, after he raped her that night. Sobbing through tears she recalled how violent he was before she attacked him--alleging he raped her in their bedroom for 45 minutes. The Defense concluded that what Lorena did to her husband was the unthinkable. After years of alleged marital rape she had enough and targeted the very source of John's tool for abuse - his penis.

The Defense continued to bring in more friends and clients of hers who spoke about what she allegedly went through while married to John. It included testimony verbal abuse and physical abuse. One of them on the stand recalled how Lorena was crying all the time and had bruises all over her body. The state alleged Lorena attacked her allegedly abusive husband because he wanted to divorce her.

She testified to the times she witnessed John openly ridicule her appearance in a degrading way. Next to the stand was the woman who had a nail appointment with Lorena. Just days before she cut off her husband John's genitalia and threw it out of a car window, she showed up at her salon as a manicurist physically and emotionally disheveled.

Dr. Susan Feister broke down her full mental health evaluation concluding that she was a battered woman in her troubled marriage to John over the years. It came after years of John allegedly taunting, teasing, manipulating, and physically abusing her.
