Her defense alleged that acute psychosis drove her to mutilate her husband. But the state claimed the very target of her cutting was in itself a goal-oriented, reasoned action.

Dr. Miller Ryans concluded after evaluating the defendant that she chopped off John's penis in a malicious, pre-planned attempt to hurt him. The prosecution team recalled John back to the stand and raised questions on claims Lorena made under oath. They included abortions, forced anal sex, and moments of marital rape. All of which he denied he forced on her.

Prosecutors wanted to present evidence that the couple's relationship was rocky in the weeks leading up to his death. The State claimed this was part of the motive for Read to kill him.

He would be found in the snow on the lawn of a retired Boston police sergeant. On the stand was ATF Special Agent Brian Higgins. He would later admit to jurors that he sent flirty texts to the defendant while she was with O'Keefe. Prosecutors hoped this would show that they had a rocky relationship before he died and help prove their theory of what happened.

Was Brian Higgins was with Karen Read and her boyfriend at the bar hours before he died. The state brought in texts between read Higgins to try to show that there were issues in her relationship with John O'Keefe. This was key to the prosecution's case which alleged she killed him because things between them were strained.

She was accused of killing him in a hit-and-run after a night of drinking. On the stand, Brian Higgins claimed the defendant planted a kiss on me as he was leaving her home after a visited. Jurors learned about how flirtatious things got between Higgins and read just weeks before O'Keefe was killed.

Dr. Susan Feister recalled how Lorena couldn't remember and did not have the capacity of right and wrong at the time of the knife attack. She concluded that not only was Lorena a battered wife but had suicidal thoughts. Her diagnosis of the defendant included: major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and panic disorder.

Dr. Feister faced a probing cross-examination. The state wanted to challenge this expert's detail mental health diagnosis of the defendant.
