Taboo Photos Murder Trial
S1, EP40 "No Proof Of Murder""A murder plot makes no sense," was what Marc Carlos, lead defense attorney, said during closing arguments. The defense ripped the prosecution's case that Tom Merriman's death was part of a murder plot that involved his stepdaughter-neighbor and several men she tried to recruit as potential hitmen. The defense delivered the final phase of their closing arguments arguing that the state failed to prove not only that Janks was responsible for a premeditated murder but that a homicide even occurred.

Killer Or Cover-Up Murder Trial
S1, EP174 "An Accident Reconstructionist"Jurors were brought back in the topic of accident reconstruction. Karen Read's defense wanted to challenge the State's assertion that she reversed her car at over 20 miles an hour to hit her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, and then drove away leaving him to die in a snowbank. Dr. Daniel Wolfe tried to make clear to the jury that he was not hired by her lawyers. Instead, he and his team independently examined the photographic evidence of the crime scene.
Killer Or Cover-Up Murder Trial
S1, EP175 "Inconsistencies In The Pedestrian Collision Theory"The expert witness on the stand testified that his firm was hired by an outside agency to analyze the damage to Karen Read's SUV which the State claimed she used to hit John O'Keefe. That third party in question was the FBI and the Justice Department. Prosecutors ad more questions for Dr. Daniel Wolfe. He told the jury that O'Keefe's injuries and the images of the defendant's car were not consistent with a collision between a pedestrian and car.
Killer Or Cover-Up Murder Trial
S1, EP176 "Testing Done By Biomechanic Experts"Karen Read's lawyers brought in another biomechanics expert to testify. Her defense relied on not one, but two crash reconstructionists for its case to try to dispute the state's claim that Read drove her SUV in reverse to hit John O'Keefe hard enough to knock him to the ground. Dr. Andrew Rentschler testified that his team's vehicle test showed greater damage to the taillight, compared to the damage found on the defendant's SUV.
Killer Or Cover-Up Murder Trial
S1, EP177 "Defense Delivers Closing Arguments"Karen Read's defense went first in delivering closing arguments. Her attorney, Alan Jackson, told the jury that the prosecutors lied and that the accusation that Karen Read killed her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, was a quote travesty of justice. Jackson went on to tell jurors not to be fooled by the State's claims. He said John O'Keefe went inside the Albert home after being dropped off and was later beaten up and dumped in the snowy front lawn.
Killer Or Cover-Up Murder Trial
S1, EP178 "State's Final Remarks"Judge Beverly Cannone gave both sides just one hour to deliver their closing arguments. It was the State's turn to deliver its closing argument in Massachusetts versus Karen Read. The lead prosecutor began with the defendant's repeated lines after finding John O'Keefe in the snow - I hit him, I hit him, I hit him. Lead prosecutor Adam Lally dismissed the Defense's long-held belief that a police conspiracy led to a cover-up and Karen Read being framed for murder.
Killer Or Cover-Up Murder Trial
S1, EP179 "She Left Him In The Snow"Prosecutors gave an elaborate timeline to the jury on how the murder of John O'Keefe occurred. The State displayed a visual exhibit of the timeline of events which included the step-by-step movements of the defendant and the victim. Lead prosecutor Adam Lally highlighted the strained relationship between Karen Read and her boyfriend, claiming this was her motive to kill him. Soon the jury of six men and six women would decide whether she was responsible for O'Keefe's death.

S1, EP180 "Hung Jury"The jury began deliberations after more than two months of testimony. They were told different stories about John O'Keefe's death and what happened during this murder investigation. Jury notes came back to Judge Beverly Cannone. But, on day five of deliberations and after 22 hours, the jury's final note to the judge made clear that they were "Deeply divided by fundamental differences." That was enough for the judge to declare a mistrial.
