She was charged with the first-degree murder of Richard Mallory and armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. But investigators said she had more victims. And if convitcted, she faced the death penalty.

Prosecutors argued that this evidence linked her to the death of her boyfriend in a hit and run.

The state police took over this case due to a conflict of interest involving a Canton police officer.

According to the sergeant on the stand, investigators drove to Karen Read's family home to ask her specific questions about the hours leading up to John's death.

Police figured this out by retrieving bar receipts and watching surveillance video.
