She was charged with the first-degree murder of Richard Mallory and armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. But investigators said she had more victims. And if convitcted, she faced the death penalty.

The State wanted to push back on that argument claiming instead his father's ongoing physical abuse led to Corey's death. Christopher Gregor's attorney challenged the expertise of the State's pediatrician who happened to specialize in infectious disease. She argued to jurors that six-year-old Corey didn't die of an infection.
