Retiring to the American West to marry his fiancée, Patricia Terrill (Carroll Baker), Captain James McKay (Gregory Peck) enters a land-and-water feud between his future father-in-law, Major Terrill (Charles Bickford), and the rough and lawless Hannassey family, led by Rufus (Burl Ives). McKay prefers peace between himself and the Hannasseys, who repeatedly attempt to provoke violence. But his steadfast demeanor only angers his fiancée and Major Terrill, who won't settle for truces.

Rancher Clay Hardin (Errol Flynn) has discovered that local saloon owner Roy Stuart (Paul Kelly) is selling cattle that doesn't belong to him, including some of Clay's own stolen stock. Armed with a tally book that proves it, Hardin now finds himself the target of Stuart's posse of gunslingers, who will stop at nothing to prevent Hardin from delivering the evidence to the proper authorities. With no one to help him except a few of his friends, Hardin has to fight for his cattle, and his life.

A devout Catholic, More stands by his religious principles and moves to leave the royal court. Unfortunately, the King and his loyalists aren't appeased by this, and press forward with grave charges of treason, further testing More's resolve.

In doing so, he runs afoul of Will Danaher, who long coveted the property. Spitefully, Will objects when his fiery sister, Mary Kate, begins a romance with Sean and refuses to hand over her dowry. Mary Kate refuses to consummate the marriage until Sean retrieves the money.
