Baseball great Lou Gehrig retires and decides to buy a ranch in the small Western town of Rawhide with his sister, Peggy (Evalyn Knapp). Upon arrival, Lou and Peggy are pressured by Ed Saunders (Arthur Loft) to join the protection association he runs. Lou refuses when he learns that ranchers can't make supply purchases unless they join with Saunders. When their ranch is attacked in retaliation and foreman Pop Mason (Si Jenks) is wounded, Lou and Peggy organize against Saunders.

Tom Shaw (Bob Steele), a ranch hand engaged to the beautiful Betty Duncan (Lois January), is shocked when he receives a package that includes several spent rounds of ammunition and three pieces of stained rope. While the local battles between ranchers over land have been escalating, this cryptic box serves as a clear threat from the notorious hired gunman Rattler Haynes (Lew Meehan). To save Betty's family's ranch, Tom sets out to face off against the nefarious gunslinger.

Refusing to be outclassed by modern technology, Autry uses gumption and strategy to bring these crooks to justice.

Dare Rudd (John Wayne) and Dinkey (Syd Saylor) are two friends who love to gamble. Needing money and shelter, they travel to Montana to visit Rudd's cousin, Tom (John Mack Brown), who owns a successful cattle ranch. Dare quickly falls for Tom's girlfriend Judy (Marsha Hunt), who convinces Tom to give Dare a chance to prove himself by running a cattle drive. When he loses the herd in a high-stakes poker game, Dare joins forces with Tom and Dinkey to get the cattle back.

The Three Mesquiteers -- Stony Brooke (Robert Livingston), Tucson Smith (Ray Corrigan) and Lullaby Joslin (Max Terhune) -- suspect the unscrupulous Rance McGowan (J.P. McGowan) of supplementing his income by rustling a breed of wild horses protected by the federal government. When Sheriff Miller (Edward Cassidy) gets trampled to death by an unknown horse, the Mesquiteers seek vengeance for his orphaned son. Meanwhile, Brooke angers Smith by courting saloon girl Rita (Rita Cansino).

Edward, Earl of Granville (Ra Hould), and his family solicitor (John Ward) travel from Great Britain to the American Southwest to sell a ranch owned by the young noble's late father. Foreman Gene (Gene Autry) and his sidekick, Frog (Smiley Burnette), convince Edward to keep the ranch, but rival land owner Jim Neale (Gordon Elliott) wants it for himself. A horse race whose winner will receive a lucrative contract with a nearby military base could raise enough money to settle the ranch's debts.

At one time not so long ago, Milt Brower (William Farnum) and Pa Jackson (Stanley Andrews) were peaceable partners in a thriving cattle business. Now divided, the two are engaged in an embittered land dispute that turns ugly when Jackson accuses Brower of the dastardly crime of cattle rustling. Faithful cowboy Roy Rogers (Roy Rogers) steps in to defend his old friend Brower, making him a hero in the eyes of Brower's doting and dainty daughter, Claire (Mary Hart).
