The parents of John Tobin (John Wayne) have been murdered, and he wants justice. John rescues them and catches Zanti, only to face criminal charges from lawman Sheriff Williams (Jack Rockwell). Zanti is let go, and John must clear his name and establish who the real criminal is.

During a dice game, the lights go out and a participant is shot to death. Larry Evans (Russell Arms), one of the players, is accused of the shooting, so Gene Autry (Gene Autry), a friend of the dead man, confronts Larry and his sister, Mary (Barbara Britton), who are hiding out in an old house. But Gene quickly realizes Larry is innocent and decides to protect the siblings from the law while he looks for the real killer. Gene's pursuit is sidetracked when an angry mob comes after Mary and Larry.

This ultimately gets Jake shot and wounded, lands Jerry in jail unjustly and leaves the pair plotting to get revenge on the criminals.

After the Civil War, cavalryman Capt. Hunt (Lew Ayres) tries to strike peace with Acoma (Ted de Corsia), a Native American chief. However, Judge Wilcox (Lloyd Corrigan) and others provoke Acoma, arresting him and shooting his men, prompting revenge from the chief. In the ensuing battles, one of Acoma's sons is killed, enraging him further. Hunt must save Cherry (Marilyn Maxwell), a dance hall girl caught up in the commotion, and try to find a way to end the bloody conflict with Acoma.

With the help of his girlfriend, Sherry (Allison Hayes), Cheney Holland (Don Megowan) breaks out of prison intent on hunting down the men responsible for killing his kid brother. After chasing down a gang of outlaws led by Isaac Stancil (Gerald Milton), Holland is himself pursued by dogged marshal Matt Gordon (Jim Davis). But Holland refuses to turn from his quest for revenge, forcing Gordon to apprehend Sherry and use her to bait Holland into a final showdown.
