Questions arise when Senator Stoddard (James Stewart) attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) in a small Western town. Flashing back, we learn Doniphon saved Stoddard, then a lawyer, when he was roughed up by a crew of outlaws terrorizing the town, led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). As the territory's safety hung in the balance, Doniphon and Stoddard, two of the only people standing up to him, proved to be very important, but different, foes to Valance.

Outlaw Wes McQueen (Joel McCrea) escapes from jail and travels to a meeting with his old partner-in-crime Dave Rickard (Basil Ruysdael). En route, McQueen dispatches a gang of bandits who try to rob the stagecoach and, in the process, wins the attentions of a young woman (Dorothy Malone) with whom he'd like to settle down. Convinced by Rickard to do one last heist, he finds out that his fellow henchmen are not to be trusted and the woman he truly loves is an ex-saloon girl (Virginia Mayo).

After four years of bloodshed, the Civil War finally ends. Discarding his weapons, Southern soldier Jefferson Waring (John Ireland) dedicates himself to the cause of pacifism. Waring relocates to a quiet frontier town in Missouri, where he hears news of profiteer Artemus Taylor (Lon Chaney) and a campaign of intimidation against local property holders. When several of his neighbors are killed by Taylor's gang, the newly nonviolent Waring struggles to determine the right thing to do.

Jet Cosgrave (John Derek) returns to his hometown after a nearly decade-long absence to win back the family ranch that rightfully belongs to him. The man who stole the property from him -- his corrupt uncle, Maj. Linton Cosgrave (Jim Davis) -- has no intention of handing it over, though. In fact, Linton turns Jet into the town outcast. Not going down without a fight, Jet hires gunmen to aid him in his battle, while a poor girl (Joan Evans) who loves him also joins his cause.

Traveling from the East to the Wild West, Beth Martin (Adele Mara) finds herself caught in a feud between saloon proprietors Mike Prescott (Forrest Tucker) and Lincoln Corey (Jim Davis). Although Lincoln tries to win the heart of the lovely Beth, she finds herself attracted to the dashing Mike, adding more fuel to their ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, Beth's brother is supposed to have been toiling away in a mine, but it turns out that he hasn't been so successful, disappointing his dear sister.
