Westbound

A former Union officer, John Hayes (Randolph Scott) now manages a stagecoach company. However, Clay Putnam (Andrew Duggan), a businessman still loyal to the South, is intent on robbing the coaches operated by Hayes, which transport gold to the North from California. Hoping to heist the treasure as a way to revive the Confederacy, Putnam also has a grudge against Hayes, since his wife, Norma (Virginia Mayo), was once involved with the handsome Union soldier.

The luck of Pat Brennan (Randolph Scott) is about to go from bad to worse; after gambling his horse away, he gets a ride from Willard (John Hubbard) and Doretta Mims (Maureen O'Sullivan). Soon, their stagecoach is hijacked by a trio of merciless bandits, led by the especially heartless Frank Usher (Richard Boone). As Usher holds the coach passengers hostage, Brennan falls in love with Doretta and develops a risky plan to free himself and the Mimses, leading to a bloody final standoff.

Kipp perseveres, hatching a plan that he thinks will draw out the bandits.

Wichita

After a group of drunken trail riders runs amok, Mayor Andrew Hope (Carl Benton Reid) of Wichita, Kan., recruits the intrepid Wyatt Earp (Joel McCrea) to end lawlessness. Armed and ready for anything, the new marshal decides he will end gun violence simply by banning guns. Soon Earp must face crooked rancher Clint Wallace (Walter Sande) and whiskey slinger Doc Black (Edgar Buchanan), vicious locals who like Wichita exactly as it is and don't take kindly to being told what to do.

Three Confederate soldiers escape from Union captivity, only to be captured by bandit Keeley -- then spared when he discovers they're fellow Southerners. Keeley forces them to help with his next planned heist: stealing gold from a wagon train led by Don Antonio Chaves. The men insinuate themselves with Chaves in preparation for the robbery, but when Will (Joel McCrea) falls in love with a widow (Arlene Dahl) traveling with Chaves, the three men must decide whether to continue the plan.

While moving his family out West, Dr. John Brighton (Joel McCrea) loses his wife in childbirth. After her death, John sets up his home in Indian territory. By the time his daughter is 7 years old, two women are competing for the doctor's affections: Ann (Barbara Hale), a rancher's widow, and Maria (Gloria Talbott), a young Native American maiden who watches over the doctor's daughter. When the town bully, Mel (Douglas Dick), wants to take the land of Maria's father, the doctor gets involved.
