The only business in the Wild West town of Jericho that corrupt sheriff Alex Flood (Dean Martin) doesn't control behind the scenes is the stagecoach owned by tough-willed widow Molly Lang (Jean Simmons) and her right-hand man, Hickman (John McIntire). Texas
Confederate soldiers Dan (William Holden) and Tod (Glenn Ford) look to Texas for opportunities when the war ends. Upon witnessing a stagecoach robbery, the close friends ambush the outlaws and confiscate the stolen funds. Tod wishes to return the money, but Dan wants to keep it. After a sheriff gives chase, each man runs off on his own. They are reunited after some time, but with Tod now an honest ranch hand and Dan an outlaw cattle rustler, the two do not know if their friendship can survive.

In Colorado at the end of the Civil War, Col. Owen Devereaux (Glenn Ford), affected by four years of brutal bloodshed, orders the massacre of a Confederate unit, even as they try to surrender. Devereaux's friend and second in command, Capt. Del Stewart (William Holden), is the only one aware of the surrender attempt. Devereaux returns home to a hero's welcome and is appointed a judge, yet his irrational and angry behavior continues, affecting his fiancée, Caroline (Ellen Drew), as well as Del.

With the entire town in an uproar over Sweet's behavior, Bedford arranges for Chocktaw Neal (Pernell Roberts), a seasoned gunslinger, to shoot him down.

Hotshot gunfighter Lot McGuire intends to make a name for himself by out-duelling legendary bandit-turned-lawman Marshal Dan Blaine. Before any bullets fly, however, Lot and his intended enemy strike up an unlikely friendship, and Blaine tries to convince the youngster to call off the shootout. Unfortunately, Lot can't be talked out of his quest for glory, and so he guns down a few hostile locals, leaving Blaine no choice but to finally accept the offer for a showdown.
