The Cheyenne Social Club
Cowboy John O'Hanlan (James Stewart) is surprised to learn that someone's left him a business in Cheyenne, Wyo. He sets out to claim it -- and is shocked to discover that it's a brothel. Madam Jenny (Shirley Jones), who runs the place, is dismayed when O'Hanlan wants to close it down, but his plans are derailed when he finds out that a local customer has beaten Jenny. He kills the man in a shootout, and then must protect himself and the girls from the dead man's vengeful clan.

Reformed gunman Ned Britt (Randolph Scott) travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to take over the abandoned newspaper. Ned refuses to fight -- which disappoints fellow passenger Flora Talbot (Phyllis Thaxter), who had taken a liking to him but now sees him as weak. In Fort Worth, Ned discovers Clevenger is battling the burgeoning railroad and decides to fight back using the power of the press.

John Drum (Rod Cameron) appears to gun down the town sheriff in cold blood, but it turns out to be part of an elaborate ruse to allow Drum, a U.S. Army soldier, to infiltrate a gang of horse thieves. As Drum becomes more friendly with the gang, he also becomes more intimate with their women, Lin Connor (Ilona Massey) and Julie Ann McCabe (Adrian Booth). Drum's allegiances become strained as he bonds even more thoroughly with the criminals as they fight together against bands of Sioux warriors.
