Cariboo Trail
Though most men are concerned with prospecting gold, American ranchers Jim Redfern and Mike Evans are trying to make a fortune by leading a long line of cattle from Montana to Canada. While they are resting one night, their herd is robbed by a gang of thugs, leaving the cowboys stranded in the wilderness without their livelihood. Jim and Mike then decide to try their hands at mining gold, but before long they run into the enemy bandits again.

In the Rocky Mountains, surveyor Tom Andrews (Randolph Scott) tries desperately to find the best route for the Canadian Pacific Railway, with the help of demolitions expert Dynamite Dawson (J. Carrol Naish). A band of trappers opposing the new railroad tries to interfere by sabotaging the construction and inciting the local Native Americans to rebel against the project. Fortunately, Dr. Edith Cabot (Jane Wyatt) is on hand to bind the men's wounds and raise their spirits.

But ranch owner Logan Maury proves to be a more than formidable opponent. He'll stop at nothing, including murder, to turn the farmers' fields into grazing grounds for his cattle.

Former railroad worker Grant McLaine (James Stewart) is hired by boss Ben Kimball (Jay C. Flippen) to help transport the railroad's payroll. The train carrying the payroll has been robbed multiple times in the past, and Kimball hopes that McLaine can successfully guard the money from the robbers. But matters are complicated for McLaine when he finds out that one of the robbers is his brother, who is now going by the name of the Utica Kid (Audie Murphy).

Training the youngsters to be cowboys, Andersen manages to get the drive underway, but their long journey is placed in jeopardy when the devious bandit Long Hair (Bruce Dern) sets his sights on stealing the herd.

However, Hawks, preoccupied with a pretty Sioux woman, Onahti (Elsa Martinelli), doesn't realize that there's conflict until it's too late.
