The Tall Men
Ben and Clint Allison have been hired to lead a herd of cattle from Texas to Montana. Before long, they see a tribe of Native Americans raiding a small pioneer village. The brothers save the spirited Nella Turner and romantic sparks immediately fly between Nella and Ben. However, Nella's desire for wealth puts a damper on their burgeoning relationship. Meanwhile, the cattle drivers must make one last trip through unwelcoming native territories.

Having left his post as governor of Tennessee, Gen. Sam Houston (Joel McCrea) resettles in Mexican territory along the southwest U.S. border. He soon sets his sights on reclaiming the land under the aegis of Texas independence, while romancing post-divorce new love interest Katherine Delaney (Felicia Farr). His efforts eventually lead to the historic Battle of San Jacinto and a very clever bit of battlefield strategy by Houston in his fight against forces led by Gen. Santa Anna.

Kansas Pacific
With the American Civil War looming, construction of the Pacific railroad is being held up in Kansas, sabotaged by Confederate sympathizers. The government dispatches an Army engineer, John Nelson (Sterling Hayden), to oversee construction, and he initially rubs the wrong way both his proud boss (Barton MacLane) and his boss's feisty daughter (Eve Miller). Eventually, though, both fall for Nelson's charms, and the hero seeks to uncover the Southern rat so he can lead the Union men due west.

When a bank heist goes wrong, outlaw Yellowleg (Brian Keith) inadvertently kills a 9-year-old boy -- the son of saloon girl Kit Tilden (Maureen O'Hara). Plagued by guilt over the shooting, Yellowleg vows to help her bury the boy beside his father in the now-derelict town of Siringo, Ariz. With criminal cohorts Billy (Steve Cochran) and Turk (Chill Wills), Yellowleg embarks on a dangerous journey into Apache territory to lay the boy in his final resting place.
