After collapsing, disoriented, in a Los Angeles diner, Louise (Joan Crawford) recounts the events of her life to a psychiatrist. While working as a nurse for the wife of wealthy Dean Graham (Raymond Massey), she falls in love with the Grahams' neighbor, David (Van Heflin), who rejects her affection. Following the death of Dean's wife, Louise becomes the new Mrs. Graham, but her dangerous fixation on David continues. She grows increasingly unstable as her obsession leads to madness and violence.

Daisy Kenyon (Joan Crawford) is an artist living in Manhattan. She is in love with Dan (Dana Andrews), a busy lawyer who is unhappily married to the volatile Lucille (Ruth Warrick). While Daisy waits for Dan to get a divorce, she begins seeing Peter (Henry Fonda), a veteran recently returned from World War II. After Dan leaves town for a few weeks to defend a dispossessed Japanese-American, Daisy impetuously marries Peter. When Dan returns, the complicated affairs become even more tangled.

After Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) receives a letter from an old acquaintance, a woman called "Mike" Yardner (Michael Learned), asking him to visit immediately, Dillon rides to the ranch. He finds it has been raided by Apaches, and Mike's daughter, Beth, has been kidnapped by a rogue Apache named Wolf. The bigger surprise for Dillon is learning that Beth is also his daughter, conceived while he had amnesia. Armed with the new knowledge of a daughter, Dillon sets out to rescue her.
