After reluctantly packing up his attractive daughter, Mollie (Sandra Dee), and sending her away to study art at a Paris college, Frank Michaelson (James Stewart) gives new meaning to the term "concerned parent." Reading Mollie's letters describing her counter-culture experiences and beatnik friends, Frank eventually grows so paranoid that he boards a plane to Paris to see firsthand the kind of lessons his daughter is learning with her new artist amour, Henri (Philippe Forquet).
Poet and professor Robert Leaf (James Stewart) has a disdain for the sciences. Unfortunately for him, his son Erasmus (Bill Mumy) is colorblind, completely tone-deaf and a natural math prodigy. While the professor tries to come to terms with his son's predilection for numbers, the talented youth and his sister Pandora (Cindy Carol) use his math talents to win at the racetrack. Erasmus hopes to use the money he makes to fly to Paris and meet Brigitte Bardot, with whom he is infatuated.

Together, they try to cope with the situation as best they can.

Having fabricated a wife and three children, Julian readily accepts when his devoted nurse, Stephanie (Ingrid Bergman), who has secretly loved Julian for years, offers to act as his wife and demand a divorce.
