Out of the Fog
Tailor Jonah Goodwin (Thomas Mitchell) and lowly cook Olaf Johnson (John Qualen) are saving their money to go in as partners on a large fishing boat and make a long-desired career change. One night, small-time gangster Harold Goff (John Garfield) bullies them into paying him five dollars a week and then has them sign a document saying the money is repayment on a loan. When Jonah's self-centered daughter Stella (Ida Lupino) takes up with Goff, the pair decide to do away with him.
Beyond a Reasonable Doubt
Novelist Tom Garrett (Dana Andrews) and publisher Austin Spencer (Sidney Blackmer) intend to show how lawyer Roy Thompson (Philip Bourneuf) has been using circumstantial evidence in capital punishment trials. They concoct a scheme in which flimsy evidence will point to Garrett as a murder suspect, but Spencer will exonerate him at the end. Meanwhile, they keep the plan a secret from Spencer's daughter, Susan (Joan Fontaine), who is engaged to Garrett. However, the trial doesn't go as planned.
The Alligator People
Newly married nurse Joyce Webster (Beverly Garland) doesn't know what to think when her husband, Paul (Richard Crane), disappears during a train ride. She hires private investigators and eventually tracks him to an old bayou plantation, where the owner (Frieda Inescort) insists she's never heard of Paul. Joyce sticks around anyway and soon learns that local doctor Mark Sinclair (George Macready) has been using a life-altering alligator serum on the town's residents, and that Paul is among them.
Baffled!
Race car driver Tom Kovack starts having hallucinations that turn out to be psychic premonitions. Convincing him of his new-found ability is Michele Brent, an expert in extrasensory perception. Together they travel to a hotel in England that provides the setting for one of Kovack's visions. A tragedy is set to occur there, and with some careful interpretation -- not to mention some fancy driving -- they just might prevent it.
Arsenic and Old Lace
Writer and notorious marriage detractor Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) falls for girl-next-door Elaine Harper (Priscilla Lane), and they tie the knot on Halloween. When the newlyweds return to their respective family homes to deliver the news, Brewster finds a corpse hidden in a window seat. With his eccentric aunts (Josephine Hull, Jean Adair), disturbed uncle (John Alexander), and homicidal brother (Raymond Massey), he starts to realize that his family is even crazier than he thought.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Gentle Dr. Jekyll (Spencer Tracy) experiments with human nature, believing that each person has both good and evil sides that can be brought forth chemically. Jekyll tests a serum on himself, releasing his vicious alter ego, Mr. Hyde, on 19th-century London. Prowling the town, Hyde ventures to a music hall and encounters Ivy (Ingrid Bergman), whom he takes forcibly as his mistress. When the serum's effects wear off, Jekyll vows never to take it again. But Hyde is not gone for good.
The Haunting
Dr. John Markway, an anthropologist with an interest in psychic phenomena, takes two specially selected women to Hill House, a reportedly haunted mansion. Eleanor (Julie Harris), a lonely, eccentric woman with a supernatural event in her past, and the bold Theodora (Claire Bloom), who has ESP, join John and the mansion's heir, cynical Luke (Russ Tamblyn). They are immediately overwhelmed by strange sounds and events, and Eleanor comes to believe the house is alive and speaking directly to her.
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Posing for a portrait, Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) talks with Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders), who says that men should pursue their sensual longings, but laments that only the young get to do so. Taken with the idea, Dorian imagines a scenario in which the painting will age as he stays youthful. His wish comes true, and his boyish looks aid him as he indulges his every whim. But when a stunning revelation forces him to see what he's become, Dorian faces some very dangerous questions.
