Stingo (Peter MacNicol), a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her lover Nathan (Kevin Kline), he learns that Sophie is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.

War of the Colossal Beast

After a series of delivery trucks are robbed and destroyed south of the border, Joyce Manning (Sally Fraser) fears her brother, Lt. Col. Glenn Manning (Dean Parkin), is the culprit. Manning is a gigantic behemoth, a victim of overexposure to radiation who has gone insane due to his freakish size. The giant is eventually apprehended by the Army and held captive. But the frenzied beast is too much for his captors and soon breaks out, intent on laying waste to Los Angeles.

Immediately following World War II, ex-Nazi Franz Kindler is living under a false identity as a teacher in a small Connecticut town, and has even married the headmaster's daughter as part of his cover. During World War II, Laurence Gerard (Dick Powell) of the Royal Canadian Air Force was taken captive by the enemy, but now that the fighting is over he has begun a quest for vengeance. Laurence's wife was murdered while he was a hostage, and his desire to right this wrong takes him from Europe to South America. The supposed killer is a Nazi sympathizer named Jarnac (Luther Adler), but word has it that he is dead. Laurence, however, believes his target is alive and hiding out in Argentina.

Gumshoe Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) is hired by the oafish Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki) to track down his former girlfriend. He's also hired to accompany an effeminate playboy buy back some jewels. When the exchange results in the playboy's murder, Marlowe can't leave the case alone, and soon discovers it's related to Malloy's. As he gets drawn deeper into a complex web of intrigue by a mysterious blonde (Claire Trevor), the detective finds his own life in increasing jeopardy.

He Walked by Night

Roy Morgan (Richard Basehart) is a burglar who listens in to radio police calls, allowing him to stay one step ahead of the cops. After Morgan kills a police officer, Sergeants Brennan (Scott Brady) and Jones (James Cardwell) have little success in putting the clues of the case together. But when Jones is wounded in a shoot-out with Morgan, Brennan employs all facets of detective work, including forensics and informants, to find the elusive and clever criminal.

The House on Telegraph Hill

Upon emerging from a Nazi death camp, Victoria Kowelska (Valentina Cortesa) takes the identity of a friend who died there. She travels to the United States where she meets her friend's son, Chris (Gordon Gebert), and discovers that she has come into a large inheritance. Eventually, she gets involved with the boy's guardian, Alan (Richard Basehart), and marries him. However, after some suspicious accidents, she starts to believe that Alan may be trying to kill her so he can claim the money.

No Way Out

Robbers Ray Biddle (Richard Widmark) and his brother are shot and taken to the local hospital. There, the two are treated by Dr. Brooks (Sidney Poitier), the hospital's only black doctor. The brothers assault Brooks with racist slurs. And, when his brother ends up dying on the operating table, Ray accuses the doctor of murdering him. Blind with rage, Ray works to turn the white community of the city against Brooks, who finds an unlikely ally in the dead man's widow, Edie (Linda Darnell).
